Privacy at a Glance

Metic is a macOS app for real-time transcription and translation. Here's the quick version of how we handle your data:

AudioMetic is a transcription and translation tool, not a recording tool. Audio is routed through our backend proxy to third-party services, processed in real-time, then immediately discarded. Temporary audio files used for speaker identification are automatically deleted after processing and are never accessible to the user.
Session DataTranscriptions, translations, speaker identification data, and session metadata are stored encrypted locally on your device. No audio is retained — only the resulting text. You control what stays and can delete it at any time.
Account DataApple ID identifier and email (via Sign in with Apple) for your account. Payments handled entirely by Apple.
AnalyticsAnonymous usage events (e.g., session duration, selected languages) sent to our backend. No transcription content or audio data included.
Third PartiesSpeech-to-text and translation services process your audio/text via our backend proxy. They don't store it.
We NeverSell your data, store raw audio on our servers, or share personal info for advertising.

This Privacy Notice for Metic ("we," "us," or "our"), describes how and why we might access, collect, store, use, and/or share ("process") your personal information when you use our services ("Services"), including when you:

1. What Information Do We Collect?

Personal information you disclose to us

In Short: We collect personal information that you provide to us.

We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you register on the Services, express an interest in obtaining information about us or our products and Services, when you participate in activities on the Services, or otherwise when you contact us.

Personal Information Provided by You. The personal information that we collect depends on the context of your interactions with us and the Services, the choices you make, and the products and features you use. The personal information we collect may include the following:

  • Apple ID identifier (via Sign in with Apple)
  • Email addresses (if provided through Sign in with Apple)

Sensitive Information. We do not process sensitive information.

Payment Data. We may collect data necessary to process your payment if you choose to make purchases. All payment data is handled and stored by Apple. You may find their privacy notice here: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/. Payments and subscriptions are processed exclusively through Apple's App Store In-App Purchase system. The app does not collect or store payment card details.

Audio Data. When you use the transcription and translation features, audio captured from your device's microphone or system audio (via Screen Recording permission) is transmitted securely (encrypted in transit) through Metic's backend proxy to third-party speech recognition services for processing. The proxy handles authentication and usage tracking but does not persist audio data. Audio is processed in real-time and immediately discarded after transcription is complete; it is not stored on remote servers beyond the processing session.

Audio Processing & Privacy. Metic is designed as a transcription and translation tool, not a recording tool. We deliberately do not allow users to access, export, or keep audio recordings — protecting the privacy of both users and the people they interact with. During active transcription sessions, audio may be temporarily written to disk in a sandboxed location to enable speaker identification (diarization). These temporary files are not accessible to the user, are automatically deleted once the session is fully processed, and are never retained on the device. Only the resulting text (transcriptions and translations) is kept. This feature can be disabled entirely in Settings → Audio → Session Recording.

Session Metadata. Session data — including transcripts, translations, speaker diarization (speaker identification) data, and timestamps — may be stored locally on your device as encrypted JSON files at ~/Library/Application Support/Metic/Sessions/. You can view, export, and delete this data from within the app.

Application Data. If you use our application(s), we also may collect the following information if you choose to provide us with access or permission:

Device Access. We may request access or permission to certain features from your Mac, including your device's microphone (for speech transcription) and screen recording (for system audio capture only — no visual screen content is recorded). If you wish to change our access or permissions, you may do so in your Mac's System Settings under Privacy & Security.

This information is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our application(s), for troubleshooting, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes.

Information automatically collected

In Short: Some information — such as your app version and operating system version — is collected automatically when you use our Services.

We automatically collect certain information when you use the Services. This information does not reveal your specific identity (like your name or contact information) but may include device and usage information, such as your app version, operating system version, and a random session identifier (UUID). Our backend servers also log IP addresses and basic request metadata for security monitoring and debugging.

Log and Usage Data. Log and usage data is service-related, diagnostic, usage, and performance information our servers automatically collect when you access or use our Services and which we record in log files.

Analytics Events. The Metic app collects usage analytics to help us improve the product. These events are sent in batches to our backend server from authenticated sessions and include:

  • Onboarding events (e.g., steps viewed, quiz answers)
  • Session events (e.g., session started/ended, duration, transcription mode, selected languages)
  • Feature usage events (e.g., mode selected, language selected)

Each event includes metadata such as your app version, operating system version, and a session identifier (UUID). Analytics events are associated with your user account, allowing us to understand usage patterns and improve the product. These analytics do not include any transcription content or audio data.

Server Logs. Our backend servers automatically log IP addresses and basic request metadata when your device communicates with our services. These logs are used for security monitoring and debugging purposes.

2. How Do We Process Your Information?

In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law.

We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, depending on how you interact with our Services, including:

  • To facilitate account creation and authentication and otherwise manage user accounts.
  • To deliver and facilitate delivery of services to the user.
  • To identify usage trends so we can improve our Services.
  • To save or protect an individual's vital interest, such as to prevent harm.

3. What Legal Bases Do We Rely On To Process Your Personal Information?

In Short: We only process your personal information when we believe it is necessary and we have a valid legal reason (i.e., legal basis) to do so under applicable law.

If you are located in the EU or UK, this section applies to you.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on in order to process your personal information. As such, we may rely on the following legal bases:

5. Do We Offer Artificial Intelligence-Based Products?

In Short: We offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies.

As part of our Services, we offer products, features, or tools powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, or similar technologies (collectively, "AI Products"). These tools are designed to enhance your experience and provide you with innovative solutions.

Use of AI Technologies

We provide the AI Products through third-party service providers ("AI Service Providers"), including speech-to-text transcription services and natural language processing services. Audio captured via your microphone or system audio is routed through Metic's backend proxy and transmitted securely to these providers for transcription. Transcribed text may be processed by AI services for translation. Audio data is processed in real-time and immediately discarded by these services; it is not stored on their servers beyond the processing session.

Additionally, when speaker identification (diarization) is enabled, temporary audio files are periodically sent through Metic's backend proxy to a third-party speech recognition service for batch processing. The audio is processed and immediately discarded by the service; it is not retained beyond the processing request. The temporary audio files on the device are automatically deleted once the session is fully processed.

Our AI Products

Our AI Products are designed for the following functions:

  • Natural language processing
  • Speech-to-Text (real-time and batch)
  • Translation
  • Speaker identification (diarization)

How We Process Your Data Using AI

All personal information processed using our AI Products is handled in line with our Privacy Notice and our agreement with third parties. This ensures high security and safeguards your personal information throughout the process.

6. How Long Do We Keep Your Information?

In Short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Notice unless otherwise required by law.

We will only keep your personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Notice, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. No purpose in this notice will require us keeping your personal information for longer than the period of time in which users have an account with us.

When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible, then we will securely store your personal information and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.

7. How Do We Keep Your Information Safe?

In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organizational and technical security measures.

We have implemented appropriate and reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any personal information we process. However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure your information, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee that hackers, cybercriminals, or other unauthorized third parties will not be able to defeat our security and improperly collect, access, steal, or modify your information.

8. Do We Collect Information From Minors?

In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age.

We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under 18 years of age, nor do we knowingly sell such personal information. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18 or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such minor dependent's use of the Services. If we learn that personal information from users less than 18 years of age has been collected, we will deactivate the account and take reasonable measures to promptly delete such data from our records. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18, please contact us at developer@metic.app.
